Unbelief is not just doubt; it is refusing to trust the Son God sent. Jesus said it is the sin the Spirit convicts the world of.
What the Bible says
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”John 3:16 · KJV
“But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”John 20:31 · KJV
“And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”Mark 9:24 · KJV
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”Romans 10:9–10 · KJV

- Confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart God raised Him (Romans 10:9).

Questions
Is doubt the same as unbelief?
Honest questions brought to Jesus are not the same as refusing Him. “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief” (Mark 9:24) is a prayer He answers.
Why is unbelief so serious?
Jesus said “if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins” (John 8:24).
What exactly do I need to believe?
That Jesus is the Son of God who died for your sins and rose again — “whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
